Corazon Aquino, my hero

Filed under: English entries — admin @ 15:30:59

I was saddened to hear today about the untimely death of former president of the Philippines, Corazon Aquino. I was the mother of a young family when she was elected in 1986, and I remember night after night seeing news reports  of Filipinos rejoicing in the street. I wondered at the strength of character that propelled this amazing woman into politics after losing her husband to an assassin. It was one of the first major political accomplishments of the era, several years before the Berlin Wall came down, and not long after Margaret Thatcher became first female PM of the United Kingdom.

Only five years later, Ang San Suu Kyi went back to her native Myanmar and I certainly expected we would soon be watching scenes similar to those when Ms. Aquino was elected.  Looking back,  the accomplishment of her election and her lengthy term in office seem all the more remarkable.

Along her skills as a leader and genuine love for her countrypeople,  the thing I liked most about her was her name, which means “heart” in Spanish.
