As you can see, his illustrations are unique. What is the character? A person? A cat? An imaginary animal? Nobody knows. And what about the green eggs and ham on the cover? Dr. Suess wrote books that children were able to read by themselves. Many of the words rhyme, so that if the reader knows a word or two, it is possible to read the whole page. Dr. Suess felt that reading textbooks for children were dry and boring. His aim was to make books that were fun so that children would be encouraged to read.

It is interesting to note that although many generations of English speakers have read (and even memorized) Dr. Suess books, there are very few translations into other languages. They are apparently an American phenomenon.

Youtube also has many animated readings of books by Dr. Suess. It might be fun to borrow the book from your local library and watch the video–something to do alone or with your children on this hot summer day!
