Summer Reading: Used Books in California

I never go to Book-Off in Japan because they don’t have many English books, but I do go to the Book-Off in San Diego, California every summer.

There is a Book-Off right next to Mitsuwa, a Japanese-style supermarket.

This Book-Off has lots of used English books. I love the $1 used book section and always find books I’ve been wanting to read. This my “fun and almost-free” book shopping.

This year I found A Girl From Yamhill by Beverly Cleary, an author of children’s books. I read many of her books when I was young, and I read the Japanese translations to my children.

In this book, Ms. Cleary wrote about her childhood during the Great Depression. I was pleased to find out that, as a child, she was very much like the hilarious and heartwarming characters in her books. She is almost 100 years old now but has never forgotten what it is like to be a child.

Here is the video of an interview with Beverly Cleary from her website.
