Cookbook from Prison: From the Big House to Your House
In murder mysteries and crime movies, characters will often mention “the big house.” The word means “prison.” If someone is “sent up to the big house,” it means they will be in prison for a while.
A group of six women prisoners used this old, cold term in a new warm way. They have written a cookbook that describes how and what they cook in their tiny cells. The title is From the Big House to Your House.
Read about it in this article. It’s a good one because it explains some of the terminology that might not be familiar to people with no experience in jail.

You can read quite a few of the recipes to see what kind of dishes Big House cooks have developed using only cooked ingredients and pots that are used to warm up (not boil) water. Reading through the recipes, I had to appreciate their imagination and creativity.
Between each recipe is a “fact” about prisons in Texas, so you can get a picture of life there just reading the samples of this book.

In the US, prisoners cannot write books and sell them for profit, so all of the profits for this book go to The Justice Institute, a group that works for innocent people who have ended up in prison.

We recently met Hirokazu Suzuki, a machine translation developer for Toshiba. We talked with him about reading and he mentioned that he finds “bestsellers” easy to read, and kindly gave us the titles of a few of his favorite books:

Hirokazu’s comment about these books: “Many books of bestseller writers seem easy to read even for non-native English speakers. Sometimes terminology, ‘technical jargon’ so to speak, is difficult but syntax, that is sentence structure, is simple. So I think their sentences are easy to read.”

Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson

ウオルター・アイザックソンの「スティーブ・ジョブズ」はアップル創始者の公認伝記で、日本でもミリオンセラーとなっています。内容については、書評など数多く紹介されているのでご存知の方は多いと思います。日本語訳の上下巻を読んだ方もいらっしゃるでしょう。
原書に挑戦したいと思っている方、日本語ですでに読んだ方は、キンドル版Steve Jobsのサンプルをキンドル・アプリでダウンロードしてみてください。Steveが里子に出され、里親に慈しみ育まれた子供時代から、高校でのSteve Wozniakとの出会い、そしてReed Collegeに進学するまでの話（Chapter 1から3の途中まで。写真も入っています）を読むことができます。アイザックソンの著述スタイルは平易で簡潔であり、非常に読みやすい英語です。
私はこの自伝を全てキンドル・リーダーで読みました。読書中に使ったキンドルのHighlight機能について少しご紹介します。紙の本を読んでいて、気になった箇所に線を引くことがあります。電子書籍でも同じようにマーキングが可能です。キンドルでは印をHighlightと呼び、簡単なボタン操作で好きなフレーズや文に印を付けることができます(加えて感想をNoteとして書き込むことも可能です)。読み終わってからメニューで”View Notes & Marks”を選べば、読んでいる間に印を付けた箇所や書き込みノートが一気にリストアップされます。”View Popular Highlights”を選べば、他の多くの読者がハイライトしている箇所を見ることができます。
読後、自分のハイライト箇所を見てみました。いくつか挙げるとこんな感じです。

“God is in the details” and “Less is more.”
“We make progress by eliminating things, by removing the superfluous.”
アップル製品のシンプルかつ洗練されたデザインの秘密に言及する言葉ばかりです。ハイライトした語句を見て、自分がいかにsimplicityの概念に惹かれているか、ということに気づかされました。
久しぶりのワンチャプター: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
I recently read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. This book is perfect if you enjoy scientific subjects and non-fiction. I was first drawn to the cover, with its picture of a woman with a big smile and the words “The Immortal Life.”
Immortal! A woman who never died? The story is about cells taken, in 1951,from a woman, Henrietta Lacks, with a particularly bad case of cancer. She died, but her cells are still alive today. Scientists succeeded in getting the cells to reproduce, and they are now used for medical research all over the world. The book is fascinating. And even though the topic is difficult, the author wrote it in a very easy-to-understand style.
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is available now on Kindle for less than 500 yen, but why not try a sample chapter for free? I downloaded a sample to my iPod Touch, and got the author’s introduction, Prologue and Chapters 1 and 2.
I noticed some new features in the sample that might be useful for non-native English speakers.

Twas the Night before Christmas—A Visit from St. Nicholas by Clement Clarke Moore

クリスマスがいよいよ今週末に迫ってきました。今日は有名なクリスマスの詩をご紹介します。”Twas the Night before Christmas”は、Dr. C. Mooreが自分の子供にクリスマスのプレゼントとして書いた詩です。Dr. Mooreの子供達はイブの夜、暖炉にプレゼントを入れるストッキングを吊るし、この詩を朗唱したそうです。詩の最初の節です。
’Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
この後、皆が寝静まったころ、可愛い妖精のようなサンタクロースがトナカイの引くそりに乗ってやってきます。そしてストッキングにプレゼントをたくさん詰めて帰っていきます。

私の持っているキンドルは、手帳ほどの重さで薄く小さいのでハンドバックにも無理なく入り、約３５００冊の本を保存できる容量があります。インド旅行にも持って行きました。ゴラン高原を走る寝台車では、寝返りもうてない蚕棚のような狭いベッドで１８時間近く過ごしました。時間をつぶすには、眠ってしまうか本を読むかしかありません。茫洋と広がる大地を薄汚れた窓ガラス越しに見ながら、キンドルでSteve Jobsの伝記を読みました。はじめはインドでアップルの創始者の話を読むのもなんだなあ、と思いました。しかし若かりし日のSteveがguruの教えと悟りを求め、当時ヒッピーの聖地であったインドを旅した話は、その国で読むと非常に臨場感がありました。Steve Jobsの伝記はかなりボリュームがある本です。紙の本だと、旅行にはとても持っていけなかったでしょう。でもバッグの中に入れインドのジャングルまで持って行きました。

「地球の歩き方–インド」も本ではなく、PDFに変換してiPadに保存し持参しました（GoodReader for iPad利用：有料アプリ￥４５０）。キンドルでもPDFを保存することはできますが、地図やカラー写真満載の旅行書はiPadのほうが一枚も二枚も上手です。
本の電子化により、「旅の友」も変わってきました。

前回の記事で、インド中央部のKanha National Parkに行き、ジャングル・サファリで虎に出会えなかったことを書きました。しかし虎の足跡、爪痕、droppingsなど目撃し、濃厚な気配を感じました。暗闇で恐ろしい吠え声を聞いた翌朝のことです。サファリ・ガイドのおじさんがタイガーグラスの茂みの前でジープを止め、語り始めました。
“This is the spot of my dramatic encounter with a tiger. That day, I spotted a deer behind grass and stopped the jeep right here to watch it with park guests. The deer was feeding. But it suddenly jerked up its head. I then realized a tiger had been silently and patiently crouching in the bush behind. The deer jumped in panic and darted toward our jeep. The tiger leapt and caught it in midair, right in front of our eyes. The tiger fell to the ground with the deer, not a meter away. With the fangs firmly in the throat of its prey, the tiger looked up at me. The deer also looked at me. Oh, those eyes! The tiger kept staring at me. But the deer’s eyes started closing slowly—so very slowly. The guests sat in the jeep in silence, dumbfounded.”

話を聞きながら驚くほどの鮮明さで虎のイメージが浮かびました。目の前の草陰から虎が今にもぬっと出てきそうな気がして、背中がぞくぞくしました。これぞ音で物語を聴くstorytellingの魅力ではないでしょうか。
インドから帰国しThe Jungle Bookを読んだあと、ガイドさんの話のインパクトを思い出して、今度はaudio recordingを聴いてみました。以前、当ブログで紹介したAudiobooksアプリを使うと、iPhone, iPad, iPodにボランティアによる録音を無料で簡単ダウンロードできます。人の声で語られるお話を聴くと、文字を追うときとは異なるイメージの広がりを感じます。パブリックドメインの本を電子化したProject Gutenbergのサイトには、ボランティアによるaudio recordingsがたくさん提供されています。興味のある本があれば、是非一度audio版も試してみてください。
